Canceled: Let’s Talk About Books! Readers' Advisory 101

Canceled: Let’s Talk About Books! Readers' Advisory 101

“What should I read next?”
One of the most frequently asked questions in most libraries. If you dread it, you shouldn’t. Instead, you can approach this exchange as a great tool for community engagement. This class will help you learn how to be more comfortable providing readers' advisory services. Through discussion and practice sessions, you’ll learn:

  • how to initiate the RA conversation,
  • how to identify and talk about a book’s appeal,
  • how to discuss reading in genres,
  • how to promote books and RA services,
  • and how to experiment with different models of RA services.

Readers' Advisory 101 is tailored for support staff, library technicians, and those librarians who want to brush up on their skills. This is an introductory level class. Bring a favorite recommendation to share with the group.

Cheryl Bryan has been teaching Readers’ Advisory and Genre Study in Massachusetts for over 10 years. She served on the ALA Readers List Committee to select the best genre fiction, and she really likes talking with people about the books they read and why they enjoy them.
