Webinar: CIPA, Filtering, and CEN

Hold the date! Registration link will be available later in October.

This webinar for public library directors and IT staff will provide detailed how-to information, so librarians can weigh their options when considering filtering and potential E-rate applications.

Topics to be covered:

  • Information about the categories that CIPA requires to be blocked – specific legal terms and definitions
  • Information about CIPA instruction to unblock a site or disable filter upon request from an adult
  • Free filtering software from CEN – what it blocks, how it works, how library asks for the service to be activated
  • How a library can customize the filter to block/unblock specific sites or add/reduce blocked categories based on local needs
  • How a library can turn off the filter for a specific computer upon patron request, and how long it takes to turn off the filter or have it turned off by CEN
  • Can it also filter the wifi network? If so, how?
  • Describe the option of hosting a filter appliance onsite at the library – cost, benefits, building Block and Bypass URL lists
  • Information about other filtering options available commercially – what do they do, how to review/select

Presenters: Maria Bernier, E-rate Coordinator, CT State Library, and Mike Pennington, Network Engineer, CEN
