Managing Children’s Services: Strategic Planning in the Youth Services Department (Free webinar)

This is a free webinar from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC).

The phrase "strategic planning" is frequently tossed around in libraries, but what does it really mean? And how does it pertain to youth services? In this webinar, participants will learn about the importance of strategic planning, what different planning processes may look like, how to involve youth services in the strategic planning process, and how to apply these processes to create a more successful youth services department. This webinar is part of a series hosted by the ALSC Managing Children's Services Committee.
Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn why strategic planning matters for youth services work.
Participants will gain exposure to different types of strategic planning, such as frameworks and action plans, that could be used in their own work, as well as what strategic planning can look like in different contexts.
Participants will discover strategies for how youth services can be involved in strategic planning within their own departments and library-wide.
Participants will acquire an understanding of potential outcomes of strategic planning.
Who Should Attend

Youth Services managers and supervisors in public libraries of all sizes with varying levels of experience, and those relatively new to the strategic planning process or those that have been through strategic planning and are looking to refresh or learn new ideas may also find the content useful.

To register for a DLD workshop or webinar, you must be one of the following:

  • current library staff member
  • undergraduate or graduate library student
  • Friend or Board Member/Trustee*
  • retired or unemployed library staff

*Unless otherwise specified that a Friend or Board Member/Trustee is not eligible for a training or workshop.

Note: paid consultants are not eligible to attend DLD workshops or webinars.

Cancellation Policy

If you cannot attend a workshop you have registered for, please remember to cancel at least 3 days in advance so we can give your spot to someone else. You can cancel via the link in your confirmation email, or by contacting Gail Hurley gail.hurley@ct.gov | (860) 704-2222.

Those who miss (without cancelling) 3 events within a 6-month period will be placed on the waiting list when registering for future events. Be sure to sign in when you arrive for any workshop.

Inclement Weather Policy

For all in-person workshops offered by the CT State Library, Division of Library Development:

If the public schools in the town where the workshop is to be held close due to weather, the workshop will be canceled. If the schools have a delay, the workshop will go on as scheduled.
