SUMMARY:Basic Book Repair: Tools & Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Note: This is an IN-PERSON workshop at Eastern CT State
University Library\n\nWould you like to save money by getting more uses per
book? Would you like to keep that out-of-print book in circulation to meet
your library patron's needs? Would you like to quickly repair simple
problems rather than purchasing a replacement? Many repairs that can extend
the life of your library collection are fast and simple\, and can be done
with easy-to-obtain\, inexpensive materials. This hands-on workshop is
appropriate for a library staff member or volunteer who will be doing book

preservation techniques.\n\nTopics covered will include:\n\n\n	Basic book
handling and cleaning\, and some damage prevention measures\n	Materials
needed for basic book repair and where to get them\n	How to repair a torn
page & how to reinsert a loose page or group of pages\n	How to pamphlet
bind and “cut” pages open\n	How to reattach a paperback cover and
tighten hinges on a hardcover\n	Options to repair a worn spine or frayed
corners\n	Introduction to some simple hardcover spine problems\n	When to
cover\, re-sew\, encase\, or rebind books\n	Resources for more information
on book repair.\n\n\nSupplies needed for the hands-on portion of the
workshop will be provided\; you may choose to bring your own book repair
tools to work with\, such as scissors\, box cutter or Xacto knife\, bone
folder\, and/or glue brush.\n\n**OPTIONAL: BRING A DAMAGED BOOK TO SHARE
AND REPAIR – Some techniques will be tried “hands-on” with provided
materials\; there will also be some time to review and repair damaged items
