SUMMARY:TIAL: The Basics of Web Accessibility and Basic Testing for Accessibility
DESCRIPTION:Join Geoff Freed of onfocusAccess as we kick off a series of 
 three workshops on web accessibility and the Department of Justice's ruling 
 on Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This workshop 
 will be divided into two parts. In the first half of the workshop\, 
 participants will receive an introduction to digital accessibility\, 
 focused not just on what constitutes an accessible Web site or 
 application\, but why it’s important to design and create accessible 
 digital materials. The session provides key insights to explain the 
 challenges people with disabilities face when trying to navigate 
 inaccessible digital materials. Participants will understand the impact of 
 inaccessible content as well as the benefits of inclusive design.\n\nThe 
 second part of the session will cover basic testing techniques to uncover 
 common obstacles found in most digital materials. Using a think-aloud 
 process\, the session host will illustrate the use of free\, semi-automated 
 and manual tools and techniques by evaluating both demonstration and live 
 Web sites that are relevant to the audience.\n\nIdentifying potential 
 problems and communicating accessibility requirements to design and 
 development teams early in the process ensures that digital materials of 
 all types are designed with accessibility in mind from the start\, 
 regardless of the target format. In the end\, participants will understand 
 not just how to identify obstacles in their own Web sites\, but what to 
 think about when designing digital materials in the future.\n\nAbout 
 Understanding Web Accessibility and the Department of Justice's 2024 Title 
 II Ruling\n\nIn 2024\, the U.S. Department of Justice issued new 
 regulations on the accessibility of Web content and mobile apps that apply 
 to state and local governments. The first implementation deadline is 
 approaching in April\, 2027\, so come and learn how these new rules will 
 affect libraries in Connecticut. This series will consist of four workshops 
 in total. \n\nPresenter: \n\nGeoff Freed\, Director\, onfocusAccess 
 Consulting. With 40 years of accessibility experience\, Geoff Freed is a 
 senior advisor to organizations working to ensure their digital experiences 
 are usable by people with disabilities and are compliant with accessibility 
 standards and regulations. Before turning to independent consulting\, he 
 spent five years as the director of digital accessibility consulting at 
 Perkins Access\, a division of Perkins School for the Blind. Prior to 
 that\, he helped lead digital accessibility efforts at the WGBH Educational 
 Foundation and the National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) for 35 
 years\, including 12 years as director of technology projects and Web media
