Romance 101

Romance 101

Romance fiction is a 1 billion dollar a year industry, but librarians rarely pay it the same attention they do other genres. Romance readers can feel marginalized or stereotyped for their reading choices, and may need extra support from library staff to feel their interests are represented at the library.  To make things more difficult, reader's advisory staff is not always knowledgeable about romance or comfortable engaging its readers. This workshop will address some of these difficulties to inform and encourage library staff to fall in love with their romance collections and these voracious readers.

Objectives:

  1. To understand the history, terminology, and landmark authors in the romance genre
  2. To discuss romance genres,  key authors, and hot trends in romance fiction
  3. To discuss principles of reader services, collection issues, and ways to support romance readers and romance communities at your library.
