Managing Library Partnerships and Community Engagement (Library Management Series)

Managing Library Partnerships and Community Engagement (Library Management Series)

Typically, the biggest partnership library managers need to address is the one with the Friends of the Library.  Beyond that, there is a veritable buffet of opportunities to choose from.  How do you figure out which one will be the most fruitful?  For example, how can youth services staff benefit from partnerships within the community?  Is there more than partnering with the local elementary school? What is “community engagement?”  How can it revive your library?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Partnerships are not relationships.  Learn the difference.
  2. Identify what opportunities exist within your community.  How to find them and how to nurture the relationship.
  3. Managing organizational culture perspectives.  No culture is like that of a library and few organizations “think” like a library.  Learn how to massage your culture to best achieve your partnership goals.

Presenter:  Tom Lawrence has been the Library Director of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District since 1995.  During his tenure with the Library District, he has supervised various fundraising activities, including annual appeals and two successful bond referenda.  Prior to his work in Poughkeepsie, Tom worked with the library systems in Connecticut and coordinated the merger of two systems into the Western Connecticut Library Council.  He also has professional experience as a library master planner and building consultant.  Tom holds a BA from the College of St. Rose in Albany and an MLS from the University of Oklahoma.
