SUMMARY:New Statutorily Required Library Policies Information Session
DESCRIPTION:In response to concerns with ongoing efforts to challenge and 
 ban books in public and school libraries\, the CT State Legislature 
 approved SB1271 which was proposed by the Committee on Children which the 
 Governor signed into law implementing new statutory requirements outlined 
 in the CT State Statutes Sections 346 and 347.This bill builds on the SB2 
 bill passed in 2023\, providing more robust language which protects 
 libraries from being compelled to take down materials because of the 
 creators' "origin\, background or viewpoints expressed." Instead\, 
 materials\, displays and programs may only be removed “for legitimate 
 pedagogical purposes or for professionally accepted standards" set forth in 
 the policies libraries would create in accordance with the bill's 
 provisions. These requirements apply to all principal public libraries and 
 are essential for continued eligibility for the Sec. 11-24b. State grants
